Today’s Photoshop exercise is to colourize a black and white sketch. This technique is very similar to what cartoonists or animators might do.

This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to complete this task. I will leave the screen on and you can follow along with me as I work on mine. I’m told you must follow the steps very carefully or you will become frustrated.

Manipulating images

Two more images for you to create – these ones deal with more advanced layer modes in photoshop. The layer mode setting changes how layers interact with each other. You will need to follow the tutorial instructions carefully in order to get the desired results. Your final results may not look exactly like the sample images, but they should be close.

The first image involves changing the colour of a certain part of an image while still being able to see the texture and shading of the original image. We do this by selecting the hair using quick mask mode and then creating a Fill Layer set to the “Soft Light” mode.
Here is a tutorial that outlines the above process step by step.
The next image deals with layers and blending modes as well. The end result is an overprocessed, gritty look.

For Wednesday, most of you have plenty to work on. For those of you who have completed all of your assignments, I encourage you to go back and improve them (that’s the way you get better at photoshop). However, if you think you’re perfect, let’s forget about how arrogant you are for a moment and take the opportunity to try some on-line tutorials.

If you’re not happy with Halloween, just google easy photoshop tutorials, (there are hundreds) and give it a go.

Fun With Filters

I would like you to experiment with the many “filter” tools available to you in Photoshop.

You will see a large list of effects available under the “Filter” menu. Most of the filters have settings you can use to adjust the effect until you get the desired results.

Filters are often most effectively used with selection tools – by leaving a part of the image unfiltered you can help it stand out in the image more clearly.

Here are some examples of Filter use:

This image was created by masking off the jeep, using the “Doublebrush” filter, inverting the selection and then applying “Doublebrush” with different angle settings.

I would like you to create four images that use filters in creative ways. They don’t all have to be the same image like Mr. Darling has done above. Go thorugh all of the filters and adjust the setting for them so you can get an understanding of what they are doing. Try to see what happens when you apply multiple filters to the same image.

When you have created your four images, post them to your blog under the title “Fun with Filters”.

Imaginary product

Create an imaginary product by combining two or more existing products (e.g. flying car (car with airplane wings), iPod Toaster – be as ridiculous/impractical as you’d like for this one)

Copy a lot of one thing into an image (for example, a lot of deer into a forest, a lot of cars onto a road, a lot of kittens into a room) Try to make everything look like it belongs there.

You’ll have a few days to work on this, so don’t rush it – try to get the most realistic, cleanest looking images possible.
If you want to see some amazing photoshop work, check out Worth 1000. Try to figure out the techniques that were used to create the images that you see.

When you have completed these images, post them on your blog. Include a brief description of the tools and techniques that you used for each image. Be sure to label the pics so I know what I am looking at.

Too Big Too Small

The goal with this assignment is simple; make something look bigger or smaller than it is supposed to be.

Use the ‘image’ tab at the top of photoshop to adjust the hue/saturation and brightness to make your new pictures blend into the background you’ve selected.

Dream Vacation

For the Dream vacation, you’re going to be using basically the same tools as you did for the about me assignment. The goal for this assignment is to try and make your photo look a little more realistic. Try using the opacity meter to insert your pictures into the image. (I’ll be giving you a brief lesson on this at the start of class)

Here was my attempt last semester.
